Bio
Qiqi Zhou (Angela)
A native of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China
She is currently studying in the undergraduate painting & drawing department at SAIC in Chicago. The artist uses oil, acrylic, sand and modelling paste as her primary materials.
The social status of women, the male gaze, patriarchy, and the objectification of women have been themes that have been explored. During the research, the artist saw that Munch’s female figures created under the influence of bohemian style were empty and numb, and had completely become a tool for men’s entertainment without consciousness. This made her starts to think about various social issues of contemporary women, and to look at these disputes with dialectical thinking.
The artist uses fragmented brushstrokes and patchwork images to show the damage suffered by women. From body to mind, combining abstract and figurative images to express the symbolism of the subject: "Who does the main character of the picture really represent?" With their deaths, the artist shows the process of objectification or self-objectification of women under social pressure and self-anxiety.
